Just read about young Timmy Mason's passing via a fellow Jamboard forum member in the UK. Although reading of cancer related deaths is an all too common occurrence in our daily lives, it seems that when the victim is a young child it hits the soul a bit harder.

New/Old Doyle

So last Monday my friend Greg Shannon is cleaning out his shed in preparation for his transfer to PR and he asks me if I wanted an old board that he's had stored in there. Of course, I am never one to turn down giving an old board a new home, so I volunteered to take it off his hands. The years have not been all that good to her but its still pretty cool to just see any of these old boards and wonder about its life's story. The wax on the deck was black and hard as a rock, but underneath you could see some pretty neat pin line work and a name. After a little effort I uncovered the logo and pin lines but I did not recognize the name "D. Doyle". Although, with the Lavalette surfing permit stickers on the bottom, figured it had to be a NJ native. Ironically, I was watching Bill Yerkes Summer of 67 surf movie (on loan from Roach) last night and up pops a young surfer named Dennis Doyle surfing in, of all places, Lavalette. How cool is that, find an old board, have no idea who shaped it but pretty sure of its origin, and a few days later it seems the answer presents itself in a grainy 1960s surf film.

Tried the GoPro camera my son gave me for Christmas. Was waiting for a clean little day to give it a go. Undecided on mounting it on one of the boards so I figured to try it hand held first. In the line-up its a bit hard to tell if I have it "on and not all that easy to paddle with either. Regardless, very happy with the clear picture it provides. Neat little toy.
Oh, and what a beautiful late January morning. Fun little loggin waves and not a cloud in the sky. Aloha!

"Hulls just don't work here." That's what the man said! OK, let me backtrack a bit. I am in one of my favorite local surf shops last week and talking boards and design with the owner. I mention my Vaqueros and some other hulls that I've had and he comments how they just don't work here (east coast). So I get a bit defensive as I know that the guy is a good surfer and ask why he'd say that. He says that he's never really ridden one and that he bases his opinion on the dynamics of the round bottom and goes on to say that a flat or concave bottom is what works best in our waves. Really? Really??

We do! Today we dropped in at the craft show at CM Elementary school. Good stuff made in our region and beyond. Picked up some nice hand made wool scarves, some locally made candles and honey, as well as a few other items. A good Christmas shopping day. Also picked up a piece of Nicaraguan pottery from ex-pat Chris Welke who now lives down in Granada. a few of us were over at the rocks enjoying some clean little ground swell. I had taken my board to work so that I could get wet as quickly as possible once the afternoon whistle blew. The shorter days require a bit more AM preparation and a little faith that there will be a clean wave waiting for the late afternoon. As the sun began to set, the moon had already snuck high into the eastern sky. Matty brought to light the many colors that were in the sky and how awesome the sights were all around us. The incredible sunset, the moonlight dancing in the near glassy swell, the sun shinning off of an airliner high overhead well after the sun had left our view. As I sat next to the rocks waiting on the right wedge that would show every few minutes, I watch Captain Dan casting a bucktail into the surf hoping for striper to jump on the line. His silhouette with the sunset to his back would have made a great photo. He hoots that there's a set on the outside. After a short little right I kick out to see Roach paddle into a nice lined up wall. The waves are picture book perfect and the surrounding views make them all the more beautiful to witness. It's times like these, when you can put aside the trival things and just enjoy being alive and in the ocean, that make you really appreciate how blessed life truly is. Aloha.

Got an email from my buddy Shawn Garry today. He'd just received some photos from his buddy/shaper Scott Busbey who's down in Nicaragua at a spot where Shawn and I were almost 2 years ago. This spot didn't break while we were there and we'd only seen a few photos of it when it was working. These photos do nothing but fuel my urge to get back down there ASAP!

About a month ago, I was heading up the beach after a surf and along comes Roach with this big Vaquero under his arm. We had spoken about it previously but up to that point I had yet to lay eyes on it. I was pretty excited just to see another Andreini as it's quite rare (ie.. never) to see one down here. Fast forward to yesterday, when he was kind enough to let me take her out for a spin. All I could say after that first wave was, "WOW!". The swell was in the 4'-6' range and pretty clean early on. It really seemed to be a perfect day for this board. The thing was so smooth off the bottom and fast down the line. It paddled great and got me into anything I was willing to go after. Some of the better sets were well overhead and it allowed me to get in early and hook up with some super fun waves. I absolutely loved it!

After a one day weather delay, our first attempt at ROCKSTOBERFEST went pretty darn smooth. The water temps dropped a bit and the wind was a little stiff but overall, it was a beautiful day. Fun little waves and good times with good people.

Had a few really fun nights on my 7'9" Vaquero this week. Being only the third time since the spring to actually have some decent size to take it out on, getting wet on someting other than my logs is always a bit of a toss up for me. Never know if I am going to feel totally lost, or just super comfortable on an old favorite. Fortunately for me, it was the latter. Although Wednesday night in CM was howling NE and a bit choppy, there were big sets that lined up and offered a nice clean wall to fly along on. The board is a true joy to ride when the conditions are good and there were a few the other night that cleaned up on the inside and really let the board do it thing. So smooth on the drops and so darn fast down the line. Rode it again last night at the rocks when the wind went offshore. Some chest+ fat ones, not long lines just more of a drop and maybe a pit to get into. A few of the backside rights were fun to slide into. So many little things about this shape have me thinking about getting another for the rare big winter days. Something about how the forward edge just kind of slides down the face while the tail edges holds you tight into the pocket. Gives me a odd comfort that I am never going to catch an edge on those late drops. Not sure it I explain it correctly but it's all clear in my head. ;) Maybe get one just a touch longer to help an old guy like me paddle a bit easier. Aloha!

Dan's 9'6" IsIs (left) and my 9'10" YYZ. With Rob G. holding on to Dan's board for the weekend, we had a chance to swap back and forth yesterday for a little compare and contrast between the two models. Although the swell didn't have perfect form, there was some size and a few would line up quite nice. Even after riding Dan's once before, I am still a little suprised with the weight difference as the IsIs quite a bit lighter than I had expected. And while I had expected some various differences between the two, there were more than I previously imagined. Let it be noted that although I am no extraordinary nose rider, I feel they both allow easy trips to the tip with the YYZ being easier to control once your up there. Guess that's a little YYZ owner favoritism. :) Regardless, they're both fun to surf so run out and test drive one for yourself. Aloha!

Another hectic week for the family. Our Nags Head vacation was cut short and we left early Wednesday a few hours before the mandatory EVAC order went into place. Then upon safely arriving home on Breakwater Road, the local officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for our entire county. After some quick reviews of the storm and the projected path and strength of it, we decided that we were going to stay put and ride the storm out in place. Stupid? I prefer to think that it is a rational decision. Were not in a the flood or surge concern area. The winds are my only true concern and since we have a basement that's where we'll hang out for the storm. Have plenty of food and water, generator is fueled (my little test run two weeks ago seems to have been a good plan), have plenty of candles, lanterns and propane for the grill. So if we do loose power, its going to be a week or so long camping adventure. The rain is already here and the breeze is stiff but not severe as yet. Irene is just into southern NC and will be here later tonight. Here's hoping that all of those folks that are in the track of Irene will weather the storm OK. Aloha!

Monday: Had the best surf of the summer. Late afternoon TS Emily ground swell, light offshores, chest w/head high sets, warm water, and the crowd was departing as I was arriving. Still stoked 6 days later.

Wednesday: Celebrated 25 years of marriage to my lovely wife. Yep, still stoked 25 years later! :)

Saturday: Our son proposed to his girlfriend on a mountain in Colorado. Congratulations to the both of them!
What a week it has been. Stoked for sure! Aloha....

For me, this summer has been one of the best that I can remember is a very long while. Although we haven't had a head high wave since April, we have had plenty of small, fun and very log worthy days. The Board Design YYZ that I picked up late last summer has become an all time favorite for me. Bottom line, its the only board I want to ride. I have tried to get some of the other boards in the basement wet, but I find myself thinking of my new love the entire time I'm surfing them. This morning was another one of those small, clean, lined up early morning surfs. Five over, toes curled around the nose, flying down the line over crystal clear water was pure joy. No matter that it was, maybe, a thigh high wave. It was perfect. Over my surfing life I have always had the mindset of trying as many different boards that I could. And while I am still open to that ideal, it has become difficult to imagine anything else being as much fun as this one. Many thanks to Mr. Carrigg for creating this magic carpet and mahalos as well to Jamie Kelly for turning me on to it. Aloha!

I wish I could've shared some of the views that were out tonight. Hit up the rocks for a surf with my buddy Roach after the rain passed through. The clouds parted, rainbows popped up in a few spots and the waves were near perfect. Small, but clean and peeling to the beach. The big man upstairs painted an awesome sky for us admire. On the drive home there were even a few folks stopped on the side of the road to take a few shots of the moment. Think its about time I pick up a new picture taker....... Maluhia!

What a fun week it's been. Took the week off to hang out with LB on his spring break and was hoping that the waves would cooperate and I would be able to get in some water time as well. Got lucky and have been able to get to the beach everyday and surf all but one day since Sunday. A couple of mushy onshore days but still worth getting wet for. This morning, with some stiff offshores, I managed two of the longest backside noserides I think I have ever had. Near perfect for a little while, the rights were just lining up and peeling down the beach. All that and I got to spend some real quality time with my little buddy. I really needed a week like this. :)

LB is on his spring break this week so I took some much needed time off as well. Slipped out this AM for a sunny Monday session and what a treat it turned out to be. Rode the new Bojorquez for the second time. Apparently my fin foiling job did the trick as the tuning fork hum is now gone. Nowhere near yesterday's size but it was almost pure glass for a while. All the money was in the sets. Some long lulls but worth the wait. A few in the near head high zone. Long fun lined up lefts and a few zippy rights. Really got to feel the board out today and I am real pleased I jumped on adding this on to the quiver. ALOHA!

After last night's crazy weather, the calls came in that the buoy was reading 10' @ 9 seconds. There was a light west wind here at the house when I left but by the time I got to the sand, it was howling. If I had to guess, I'm saying 25+ kts. The boys were already out and after only bringing my 4/3, I was figuring to be freezing my butt off in a matter of minutes. Paddle out wasn't too bad and the water was feeling pretty good. Plenty of size in the swell but the almost side shore wind was just nuts. Peaks everywhere and staying in one spot was near impossible with the wind blowing us down the the beach. Had a few fun ones and missed a few bigger ones that I just couldn't push through due to the wind. My first left was well overhead but I just couldn't keep up with it. Good exercise.... .....makes a nice surfing board. Had one of those special days on this yesterday afternoon. Howling offshores made for some late entries but also some sweet lined up walls. Ducked under a lot of pitching lips, had some great views and even made it out from underneath of a few. :) This was about my 5th or 6th time out on this board and finally one of the first sessions were I really felt what it can do. The down the line speed is unreal, more so than my other hulls, and the overall smoothness of it was pure bliss. So many little things were going on that after each wave I was just pumped to get into another to see if I could make it happen again. I am still stoked 24hrs after...

Hummmmmmmm. Think tuning fork...... Paddle into my first wave on my new Bojorquez and I thought I was being followed by a pod of whales. Never have I heard a fin hum that load. It was wild. Otherwise, the first surf on it was a little more than I was expecting in the size dept. Forecast was waist to chest and once in the line-up it was evident that those would be the smaller of the offerings this day. None the less, the board flys and other than the fin music, it worked great. Still cold out, and my toes were again ice cubes after and two hours. Aloha!

Found this on Craigslist awhile back but could not pull off a purchase at the time. Fortunately for me, the seller was in no rush and said he'd hold on to it for a month or so before re-listing. Drove up to OCNJ to pick her up this AM. BeautiHULL! 8' Scott Anderson Malibu special, never ridden. Stoked to have another Bojorquez in my quiver.

Early AM session at the Rocks with Roach and his friends from the FAA center. Chilly with the wind on it a little bit. Still fun with some wedges right off the jetty. The rights were lining up for some long slides while the lefts were short and fast. A few sets in the shoulder high range made it all the more enjoyable. Pretty fun way to wind down the work week. I have a strong dislike for this night shift I am on, but a morning surf during the week kinda takes the edge off.... Sorry, no photos. You'll just have to take my word for it. Aloha!

Dan, aka "Roach", is currently babysitting his buddy's Tom Wegener log. I have yet to see it in person but from the photos and the stories, she's a beast. Being on the night shift I missed a chance to see her slide yesterday afternoon but I am hoping for another opportunity in the near future. Here's hoping I get a chance to slide a few on her myself.... ;)

Family weekend in OCMD. Fun stay on the opposite side of the Bay. Took in a few sights and relaxed!!!

Stopped by a few shops on Saturday. Chauncey's (53rd St.) had the best board selection, hands down. A great collection hanging from the ceiling as well as some vintage logs stacked along the wall in the back. Class of the new stock was a sweet Christenson glider on the display rack. Gloss black and just wicked! After commenting on a transitional era stringerless Farrelly that was hanging up. This 6' Christenson stringerless hull made an appearance. Board was sold but Zach here, pulled her from the back room so we could check it out. Breath of fresh air to meet folks like this. Cool shop, great boards, and the most Aloha on the beach. Windy Monday

Monday afternoon at the rocks. NW wind howled all day and by late afternoon things were groomed to near perfection. Paddled out at low tide and for an hour or so it was near perfect. Saw Chuck D. get into some nice ones. Fun session with just a few friends.

Rolled over in the morning to check out the Cove in the howling onshore gale that was dominating our local weather. The ocean had a pretty solid "Victory at Sea" type of theme working pretty good. About 4 in the afternoon the wind shifted NW and really went nuts for several hours. My hopes for a Saturday morning surf were starting to dim.

So when I headed over to "Trestles" this morning, I was stoked to find that there was still some swell in the water and even more pleased to see how clean and lined up it was. Super fun in the waist high range with some plus sets sliding in out of the north east. So many fun waves and a couple of friends out to share them with. Stoked!!!

Earlier this afternoon I heard the news of Yancy passing away after a surf in southern CA. Sad to hear and my deepest sympathy to his family and the entire Gulf Coast surfing community. Thanks for so many fond memories Yancy. So many of us Pensacola rats may have never made it into the line up if not for your stoke. I hope the big man upstairs has copied the old Pensacola Point and its goin off for you up there. Aloha 'oe

A few I wish I still had....

Today it's windy, cold, and what little swell there was yesterday was blown away by last night's NW gale. A little on the bored side so I flipped through some of the photo archive. Here are a few boards that I have some fond memories of....

9'2" Anderson Bojorquez(grande) - Sort of my first intro into the hull world. I had a 70s egg at one point that was probably my first board with a lot of belly but this one really changed how I felt about surfboard design and it opened my eyes to the displacement hull realm. It was "the" board I felt I could surf just about anything I decided to paddle out into. One particularly large day in Nicaragua really comes into view when I recall some of my fondest memories of this board. And while getting caught inside on some of the well overhead sets on a 9'2" was not all that fun, the smooth drops and down the line speed on waves that were well above anything I have ever ridden, were pure bliss. Up to the month before that fateful day, I had only ridden her with volan flex fins. Had a 9" Greg Liddle narrow base that was crazy loose and just seemed to make the board fly. The board would slide sideways sometimes as I dropped down the face and then catch and when it caught it seemed like there was a gas paddle that I could never push all the way to the floor. It was so cool. I went to a 10" Larry Allison pivot flex after a while to get a bit more grip and it eventually become my fin of choice. On a whim I got my hands on this Scotty Stopnik fin because I really dug the shape of it. Although it wasn't a volan flex it did have a little flex in the tip and it seemed to work pretty good for me. She broke on a rather heavy day at Poverty during the Igor swell. We'd had a couple of good waves and few nice big walls to play on before I took one that opened up and just pitched, so we pulled in, got shut down and she was gone. I miss her dearly.

This was a custom order from Mike Hague over in Lewes,DE. I met Mike through Surfrider DE and ended up with one of his shapes through a mutual friend. When I first moved back to south jersey I ordered this one for those days that were not "longboard friendly". It was a 7'6" single to double concave that I really never fully got the hang of. Not saying I didn't have fun on it because I truly did. I kinda put it to the side too quickly and in hindsight, that was a poor decision. A few winter sessions in Cape May that first year were great on this, looking back I can't figure out why I let it go...

7' Hobie Peter Pan Slug - I had been riding longboards and my Devine egg(mentioned below) and wanted to go smaller. Bought it on a whim off of Ebay for maybe $200. It was almost flat with little to no rocker at all. As I was still in the dark in regard to flex fins, I rode it with the fin it came with. It was a good paddler and I had a lot of fun on it. It too fell to the wayside as my mind wandered and was sold off to make room for something else. A few particular good days down in DE on this thing still bring a smile to my face.

6'10" Heritage pintail - I wish I still had it but to be honest, I could never surf it. Would like to have it back if only as a piece of NJ surfing history. For its age, it was in great shape. If my memory serves, I bought it in Stone Harbor for $150 sometime in the early 1990s.

7'4" Brian Bulkley & 7'6" Jay DeVine egg - The Bulkley was another impulse purchase. In 2005 I had high hopes of getting myself to mainland Mexico with some friends and the trip plans fell apart. I rode it only a handfull of times and never in anything like what it was designed for. It held so nice on a steep face I can only imagine how much fun it would have been in bigger surf. As for the Devine, when I got it, it was my first board back under 8'6" in almost ten years. After I left Cape May in 1997 my surfing time had become quite limited until the later part of 2001 and I only felt comfortable on longer equipment. I met Jay at East of Maui surf shop in Dewey Beach, DE and after a few conversations, I had him make me this one. It was by no means perfect but it sure put some stoke back into my surfing. A great paddler and a fun all around board. I have to say that after 4 years of being "out" of it, this was the board that got me back "in".

Super Bowl Sunday

Didn't look like much at first glance but since it was such a nice day I figured what the heck. Maybe thigh high or a little better on the sets but oh so clean. Offshore, blue skies and long slides both left and right.

Came home, did a few chores and took a nap. Woke up just in time to watch the kick-off...

After looking at the above photo, I found it a little ironic how much things have changed since I snapped the shutter on this one. The Bojorquez is in two pieces, Yater sold, Cooperfish was traded, the fence is gone and so are the chickens. Only the Civic and the Jacobs remain. ;)

Headed over to the "Rocks" this AM for an impromptu family beach clean up. Managed to gather up two full trash bags and a few other larger items and get them off the shoreline. We stacked up a few piles of various large wood planks and pieces into piles up near the dunes. We'll need a tractor or ATV to get those off the sand.

Heard the sad news this afternoon that George Gerlach had crossed the bar. If you are a Southern NJ surfer, I am almost sure at some point you have made the trip to 3101 Asbury Ave in Ocean City. While I did not know him socially, anytime I had the chance to chat with him at Surfer's Supplies or in the line-up was always a treat. Mahalo George, and Aloha 'Oe.
